High Value Treats

High Value Treats

A high-value treat in dog training is a particularly enticing or special food item that your dog finds more exciting and rewarding than their usual treats or kibble. These treats are often used in situations where you need to capture your dog's attention quickly, reinforce new or difficult behaviours, or when training in environments with a lot of distractions.

Examples of High-Value Treats:

Cooked meats: Chicken, turkey, beef, or liver (plain, without seasoning). Cheese: Small cubes of cheese like cheddar or mozzarella. Hot dogs or sausage: Thinly sliced, these can be very motivating. Freeze-dried treats: Such as liver, fish, or meat-based freeze-dried treats. Peanut butter: (without xylitol, which is toxic to dogs). Dog-safe baby food: Some dogs love baby food pouches, like meat-based flavours.

Why We Use High-Value Treats:

  • Motivation- High-value treats are more exciting than everyday food, which increases your dog’s motivation to perform or learn new behaviours. They’re especially helpful for:

  • Training new commands.

  • Reinforcing behaviours in distracting environments.

  • Working on challenging behaviours, like recall or loose-lead walking.

  • Focus in Distracting Environments- When you’re training in busy places like parks, where distractions are everywhere, a high-value treat can help your dog stay focused on you.

  • Speed Up Learning- Since dogs are more eager to work for high-value treats, they tend to learn faster when these treats are used. The excitement and anticipation of a high-value treat make the dog more engaged in training.

  • Reinforcement for Trickier Behaviours- If a behaviour is difficult for the dog (such as staying calm around other dogs), a high-value treat serves as a stronger reinforcement, helping to cement the desired behaviour.

When to Use High-Value Treats:

During early stages of training: For teaching new behaviours or when working on complex commands.

In high-distraction environments: To keep your dog focused when there are lots of distractions.

To reinforce good behaviours in challenging situations: For example, if your dog struggles with recall or staying calm around other dogs, high-value treats can boost their focus and success.

By using high-value treats strategically, you can increase your dog’s motivation to learn, helping them stay focused and engaged, especially in challenging situations.
