Barking

Why do dogs bark?

Usually dogs either bark in an attempt to get something they feel is good to happen, e.g. attention, or an attempt to prevent something they feel is bad from happening, e.g. somebody entering the house. When it results in getting the dog what they wanted, like attention or a person walking past the house rather than coming into the house, they quickly learn that barking was a good thing to do-and then they repeat this behaviour again next time!

What you can do about barking?

Here are some steps you can follow to help:

1. Identify Triggers

  • Pay attention to what causes your dog to bark (doorbell, other dogs, strangers, etc.). Understanding the triggers will help you manage and address the behavior.

2. Positive Reinforcement

  • When your dog stays quiet after a known trigger, such as a knock on the door, immediately reward them with treats, affection, or playtime.

  • Reinforce this behavior consistently to help them associate being quiet with positive outcomes.

3. Ignore the Barking

  • If your dog barks for attention, avoid acknowledging them until they stop. Once they’re quiet, reward them. This teaches that barking does not get them attention, but being calm does.

4. Desensitization

  • Gradually expose your dog to the barking triggers in controlled settings. For instance, if they bark at the doorbell:

    • Ring the bell softly.

    • Once they stop barking, reward them.

    • Increase the volume over time and keep reinforcing calm behaviour.

5. Provide Mental Stimulation

  • Often, excessive barking can stem from boredom or pent-up energy. Make sure your dog gets enough physical and mental stimulation through regular walks, play, and interactive toys.

6. Teach an Alternative Behavior

  • Encourage your dog to do something else instead of barking. For example, if they bark at the door, teach them to go to a designated spot or lie down when the doorbell rings. Reward them for this alternative behavior.

7. Consistency

  • Make sure everyone in the household uses the same command and approach to avoid confusing the dog.

By using patience and consistency, your dog will learn that not barking brings them rewards.
